Jan Håfström as Hotel Eden

April 26, 2019 May 12, 2019

For 17 days this spring, Jan Håfström's painterly installation Hotel Eden will be displayed in Liljevalch's sculpture hall.

The project is a summary of Håfström's more than 50 years as a curious artist. In the works presented there is his special universe: the most personal, the playful, truffled with rich doses of art historical references.

Hanging in a spectacular rusty scaffolding, eight double-sided paintings are displayed that in various ways summarize Jan Håfström's artistry. In the paintings, idols such as the painter Torsten Andersson are joined by Håfström's customary signs for his own past. The exhibition is to be seen as a tribute to the studio as a free zone where anything is possible, where the present slips into a past and on into the future.

Jan Håfström (b. 1937), painter, cartoonist and sculptor, made his debut back in 1966 and is one of the most acclaimed artists of our time with countless exhibitions in Sweden and abroad behind him. Since the 1960s, Håfström has constantly found new entrances into his art with unreliable energy and curiosity. He moves tirelessly, high and low, around childhood memories linked to symbolic looks in our troubled present.

During the 2000s, Håfström has mainly engaged in figurative painting in comic-book suites that, among other things, has resumed contact with one of childhood's great heroes, the elusive double nature Mr. Walker – aka the Phantom – that acts as Håfström's alter ego, as a father figure and as an image of the creative man.

Open every day from 11 am to 5 pm during the exhibition period.
