During eight months\, Liljevalchs turns into a house for the nine muses and the four elements – earth\, water\, air and fire. \n\n\n\n“Once upon a time there was infinity\, a revolution around the sun\, a planetary time axis\, a spiral. Once upon a time there were nine muses and four elements.”– Excerpt from Ylva Snöfrid’s manuscript. \n\n\n\nThe House of the Muses is based on a manuscript written by Snöfrid in the Swiss alps. The most extensive presentation of her practice up to date\, the exhibition spans 400 paintings\, thousands of sketches\, prints\, objects\, as well as specially crafted furniture coated in oil paint. Everything is transferred from the artist’s home over to Liljevalchs and many of the works bear traces of the artist’s life and earlier works. \n\n\n\nSnöfrid’s pictorial cycles spans over decades. A recurring one is the ritual painting\, where each act is an artistic one\, interweaving life and art in a flow where existentiality opens up towards a cosmological perspective and the imaginary is merged with the stardust and the dark matter of the universe. \n\n\n\nThe House of the Muses unfolds in thirteen galleries where each room corresponds to a muse or an element asking the questions: Whose perspective is this? Whose childhood? Mine? Yours? Ours? Who is the protagonist? Who is the monster? As a visitor\, you’re invited to engage with the work and to move through the exhibition in your own individual manner. There are around 30 rituals to take part of\, and you can participate in festivities\, plays and happenings where the paintings and installations are made usable. The exhibition also follows life events such as birth\, childhood\, adolescence\, wisdom and dream. \n\n\n\nThe work embraces a number of partnerships with other artists and parties. Prior to the opening of the exhibition\, and during its duration\, the artist is working together with the director and actor Rebecka Hemse and The Royal Dramatic Theatre. Actors from the ensemble of The Royal Dramatic Theatre will on a number of occasions enact scenes inside the work\, stemming from both the world drama repertoire and from scenes based on the manuscript Snöfrid has written and edited alongside Rebecka Hemse. The scenes become elements of the work and new works within the work simultaneously – a dialogue between artist and playwright\, between art and drama\, between Kunsthalle and theatre. \n\n\n\nThe last gallery\, number 13\, is dedicated to the dream world\, and here\, the new painting suite The Dream Rite expands across the floor. Here\, the visitors can step on the paintings and engage with the work through their own dancing rituals. On a number of occasions\, the work will be activated through music created by the music producer Kornél Kovács and the musician Isak Hedtjärn\, as well as dance based on the choreography of the Dream Rite. \n\n\n\nAn exhibition catalogue is produced by the culture publication NUDA. The experimental three-parted publication follows the progression of the exhibition\, containing multiples\, the artist’s own deck of tarot cards with instructions for rituals\, texts by Nicolas Bourriaud\, Cathryn Drake\, Sinziana Ravini\, Joanna Sandell Wright\, Cara Schacter and Marina Tsvetajeva\, as well as parts of Snöfrid’s manuscript.Ylva Snöfrid is known for her performative works\, pushing the boundaries of painting; within Snöfrid’s ritualized world\, everything revolves around painting that moves between figuration and matter. To mark Liljevalchs 110th anniversary\, the artist Ingela Johansson has been invited to curate a program in two parts\, in which she examines the history of the art institution. \n\n\n\nIn Ingela Johansson’s artistic practice\, she explores Sweden’s connection to the wider world\, and is well known for her expert archival work. Here\, she deep dives into the ways Liljevalchs has shaped conceptions of art\, which artistic expressions have been granted space and the impacts different periods of time have had on the institution. The archive becomes a material through which Johansson analyses the changes\, disparities and blind spots of the institution. \n\n\n\nLiljevalchs is a “home for artists” that grew out of a vision about strengthening the art life at a time when public spaces for art were rare. What was considered urgent within the Western contemporary art at the time was given a central location in an esteemed architectural building. Simultaneously\, an exhibition space for traditional practices such as arts and crafts and design was enabled: the popular associations and civic organisations got the opportunity to represent their members and art was educational. \n\n\n\nFor more than a century\, the programme of Liljevalchs has oscillated between the local\, the everyday and international art scenes. The art institution has mirrored both social phenomena and commercial aspects of art and political structures. In particular\, this was the focal point during the women’s rights movement with renowned women’s historical exhibitions. In her extensive archival research\, Ingela Johansson has scrutinized the history of Liljevalchs and asked herself what the wide range of art showcased at the institution has meant. \n\n\n\nOver two public talks with invited guests\, Johansson presents parts of her inquiry. She teaches Art History and Visual Studies at Umeå University. Over six weeks\, Sara-Vide Ericson works in a container on deck painting sixty new works\, while the ship is breaking through two-metre-thick ice surrounded by a landscape that’s constantly shifting. \n\n\n\nIn 2025\, Sara-Vide joins the expedition Canada-Sweden Arctic Ocean in which the icebreaker Oden paves the way through the frozen landscape. The process is both transformative and strenuous\, including helicopter excursions onto the ice to gather material for the works emerging on board as well as for the continued work in the artist’s home studio in Hälsingland. \n\n\n\nDRIFT spans around sixty new works\, a story about the human drive meeting the unyielding forces of nature\, but also a confrontation with inner drives\, fears and limitations. \n\n\n\n-Sara-Vide Ericson approaches other forces in nature. I’m fascinated by and recognize the urge that compels her when she paints. In some ways\, she doesn’t differentiate between the predator’s hunger\, the horse’s need for movement or her own urge to make art. The need to paint is simultaneously an insight and an urge\, says Joanna Sandell Wright\, Artistic Director of Liljevalchs. \n\n\n\nFor this exhibition\, Sara-Vide Ericson has worked in an expanded field of painting\, ranging from monumental canvases and installations to materials from the Arctic expedition. At a depth of 4\,000 metres beneath the Arctic Ocean\, rare ground sediments were collected through deep sea drilling – a research material where organic and geologic content is preserved in oxygen-deficient environments for millennia. In Ericson’s work\, these unique sediments integrate into the works: they are dried\, ground and transformed into pigment. Simultaneously\, they approach each other through the body – via touch\, scent and taste – in an exploration where measurable data meet sensuous experiences. Here\, the precisely measurable is faced with the deeply subjective. All the works are new and are exhibited for the very first time.The expedition is a tangible experience of displacement and resistance\, but also an image of the conditions of art-making. When the body and the immense presence of the ice meet\, themes that long have characterized Ericson’s practice are deepened: presence\, transformation\, and the limit between dissolution and unity. \n\n\n\nDuring the last few years\, Sara-Vide Ericson has established herself as one of her generation’s most significant artists\, exhibiting both in Sweden and internationally. In her figurative painting\, personal experiences\, mythical motifs and the sovereignty of nature are interwoven in intense and physical imagery. The practice emanates from a physical way of working\, where presence\, vulnerability and transformation are recurring themes.
