DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with a talk by the philosopher and Harvard professor Michael Rosen centered on the concept of dignity\, followed by a guided tour of the exhibition When We See Us by Director of Liljevalchs\, Joanna Sandell Wright.  \n\n\n\nDignity runs through modern life\, from the Human Rights Committee of the United Nations to the ways that we look at one another when we meet. Yet it is puzzling too. Dignity has meant very different things to different people at different times and places. The philosopher\, Michael Rosen\, will bring out some of those ideas and ask what they tell us about ourselves. \n\n\n\nMichael Rosen is the Senator Joseph S. Clark Professor of Ethics in Politics and Government at Harvard University. Among his books are Dignity: its History and Meaning (2012) and The Shadow of God: Kant\, Hegel and the Passage from Heaven to History (2022). \n\n\n\nAfter the talk\, Joanna Sandell Wright\, Director of Liljevalchs\, will give a guided tour of the exhibition When We See Us\, with a focus on the concept of dignity.Limited number of seats. DESCRIPTION:When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in PaintingCuando Nos Vemos: Un siglo de Pintura y Figurativismo Negro \n\n\n\nTe invitamos a una visita comentada en español por la exposición When We See Us en Liljevalchs\, desde una perspectiva decolonial y afro centrada. \n\n\n\nConcebida originalmente por el Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) en Ciudad del Cabo y co-curada por Koyo Kouoh y Tandazani Dhlakama\, la muestra toma su título de When They See Us (2019) de Ava DuVernay para proponer un giro hacia la auto-representatividad\, o lo que Achille Mbembe denomina “autonarrativa”. La exposición traza relaciones artísticas que atraviesan fronteras geográficas\, generacionales y conceptuales\, dando forma a las llamadas “estéticas paralelas”\, y reúne obras de artistas que se presentan por primera vez en Suecia\, acompañadas por una traducción sonora del compositor sudafricano Neo Muyanga. \n\n\n\nEl recorrido está a cargo de Rossana Mercado-Rojas\, artista\, especialista en pintura\, investigadora y trabajadora cultural peruana radicada en Estocolmo\, quien se aproxima a la exposición desde la experiencia de la migración\, el desplazamiento y las historias coloniales que atraviesan lenguas\, territorios y cuerpos. El énfasis estará puesto en artistas afro-diaspóricos vinculados a América Latina y el Caribe\, abordando la pintura y el figurativismo como formas de narrativa\, representación y documentación. El recorrido incorpora además un contexto histórico que destaca el papel de Haití —la primera república negra\, la primera revolución exitosa liderada por personas esclavizadas y la primera nación independiente de América Latina—\, junto con reflexiones sobre las historias contadas y no contadas de los procesos independentistas en América Latina y los procesos de abolición de la esclavitud. Please note that several of the events have limited capacity and require advance booking. \n\n\n\nFinissage PartyFriday 28 August\, 5–8 pm\n\n\n\nExtended opening hours and free admission. Join us as we round off the exhibition with a festive evening in Blå Porten’s garden\, with music and refreshments (we will serve a free drink to the first 200 guests). The When We See Us exhibition will stay open until 8 pm especially for this evening\, so take the opportunity to see it if you haven’t had the chance yet—or visit it again if you’ve already been. \n\n\n\nRSVP here \n\n\n\nFinissage SymposiumSaturday 29 August\, 1–5 pm\n\n\n\nMarking the conclusion of When We See Us\, the symposium brings together artists and curators to consider what a century of Black figuration means within our contemporary times. Curated by Tawanda Appiah\, it extends the histories\, artistic lineages and conceptual nuances that run through the exhibition. It opens a space for reflection on painting as self-authorship and embodiment\, alongside archival memory\, ancestral presence and imagined futures. SUMMARY:September Sessions x Liljevalchs: Choose the way ritual
DESCRIPTION:As part of the September Sessions art festival\, Liljevalchs presents a participatory performance in Ylva Snöfrid’s exhibition The House of the Muses. \n\n\n\nDuring this immersive performance inside Ylva Snöfrid’s exhibition The House of the Muses\, the Choose the way ritual is activated. The visitors are invited to enter and go through the artist’s paintings\, where a choice between two possible paths is to be made: the pink which leads to The Dream Rite\, or the grey\, leading to Dystopia. It all begs the question: What kind of world do we want to see?The artist will be on site and lead the performance.Free admission between 1 and 3 pm. No pre-booking required. \n\n\n\nYlva Snöfrid is known for her performative works\, pushing the boundaries of painting; within Snöfrid’s ritualized world\, everything revolves around painting that moves between figuration and matter. Her artistic process often takes place in communal rooms and in collective rituals\, where she takes on the role as a mediator between work and reality. In 2017\, she performed a “transmutation ritual” in which she became one with her twin soul Snöfrid. \n\n\n\nYlva Snöfrid has been based in New York\, Berlin\, Athens and Stockholm. She has exhibited extensively around the world in numerous large exhibitions and site-specific works\, including Istanbul Biennal\, Performa in New York\, Palais de Tokyo\, Swiss Institute in New York\, Institut Suédois in Paris\, Bonniers konsthall and Kunsthal Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. \n\n\n\nSeptember Sessions is a four-day art festival in Stockholm\, initiated in 2023 by Index – The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation and Mint.
