The relationship between people and jewellery is strong. We often charge them with a personal value and they can carry memories and emotions. They can mark important moments in life, be used to reinforce an identity, or worn to provide protection as amulets and talismans.

Göran Kling sees jewellery as a meme where the understanding of value is created through a collective idea of what is precious and desirable. His work explores relationships between symbols and people, between craft techniques and aesthetic expression, and between the creator and the recipient of the jewellery.

In his work we encounter smileys, cobras, hands and eyes depicted in rings and reliefs of shiny metal. These symbols belong to the deeply human. They have been with us throughout the ages and are also part of the age-old relationship between man and jewellery. Here they are mixed with popular culture references and through manipulation and surprising combinations he makes the symbols his own. Kling's unique world of motifs emerges, creating surprise, recognition or making us burst out in a smile. Kling's jewellery tempts us to embrace them and make them our own.
