For many years I’ve been a photographer. After moving to Sweden six years ago I began working with clay. I feel a tenderness toward the material and want to stay close to it in my practice. I am drawn to the direct sense of touch and the physical presence of clay.

A sense of simplicity and timelessness is important to me – creating something that cannot easily be placed in a specific time or place. Guardian #1 is based on a shape I’ve been
returning to for some time, initially in a more abstract way. With this sculpture, I wanted the figure to become more of a being than a shape and added a reduced head form, whose division can be read as eyes.

For me, eyes play a decisive role: they can give a figure life while also defining it, marking the moment when a sculpture begins to become someone rather than something. This
moment of becoming someone interests me
