Stockholm art visits Liljevalchs+
23 februari 2024 – 21 april 2024
Stockholm Konst is responsible for the city's art collection. For the third year in a row, a selection of the latest acquisitions made to the collection is exhibited at Liljevalchs+.
The City of Stockholm's art collection is one of the country's largest in public ownership. Today it consists of more than 32,000 works and includes paintings, graphics, drawings, photography, sculpture, video and objects. Every year, a number of new works are added to Stockholmers' own art collection. The selection is made by the unit's director and curators, with the ambition of reflecting trends in Stockholm's art scene.
After the exhibition at Liljevalchs+, the new acquisitions are placed in various municipal activities, such as schools, nursing homes, district offices and preschools. The New Acquisitions exhibition is a unique opportunity to see a comprehensive presentation of artworks purchased over the past year. Like the other works in the collection, they are then spread across the city, from Akalla in the north to Farsta in the south.
Some end up in a place where they are accessible to all and seen by many.
Some end up in spaces where only staff have access and a limited number have access to the art. This is as it should be, art has an important role to play in both contexts. There are works of art that have been in the same place for over a hundred years, and works of art that are relocated after less than a year.
Some works of art end up in storage, waiting for a suitable location due to material reasons or the spirit of the times. What was desired and celebrated 20, 30 or 60 years ago is not always the same as today. But surprisingly often, despite its age, a work of art can feel completely contemporary or have a timeless quality. Or it is precisely the clear connection to history that is important, that the art depicts another time. The art in this particular exhibition is the selection that will reflect the early 2020s in the collection. Look closely, the art probably says more about us and our time than you think.
