Princess Svanevit
2 February 2022 - 24 April 2022
At Midsummer 1930, the Princess Svanevit was launched, decorated with unique intarsia by Ewald Dahlskog. In February 2022, the interior will be shown in a concentrated presentation at Liljevalchs+.
Princess Svanevit is a unique example of both Swedish boatbuilding and Swedish craftsmanship. She was commissioned by the prominent publisher Erik Åkerlund (1877-1940) for the Royal Swedish Swedish Sailing Society's 100th anniversary, and was built at the internationally renowned Neglinge shipyard. With its 22 metres, Princess Svanevit is the world's longest so-called R12. The elegant interior design is an unusual feature in a racing yacht, and also a shining example of twentieth-century classicism, also known as Swedish Grace.
The intarsias are characterised by the factual imagery of twentieth-century classicism. The compositions have an austere and refined simplicity that is revitalised by the grain of the wood veneer. The result is an expression in which the artistic idea, the material and the craftsmanship are in complete harmony.
Ewald Dahlskog (1894-1950) was a well-known artist in the first half of the 20th century, and one of the most prominent names among the Optimists. Today he is perhaps best remembered for his work in the Swedish crafts: as a glass artist, a ceramicist and a revivalist of Swedish interior design.
Princess Svanevit changed hands for the first time in 1934, and for many years her whereabouts were unknown. In autumn 2017, Princess Svanevit finally found her way back to Swedish waters and has since been completely renovated. This makes it possible to show the newly restored interiors at Liljevalchs before the boat is re-launched in the summer of 2022.
The exhibition will be shown in the Upper Gallery, Liljevalchs+, and runs from 2/2-24/4 2022.
